5G NR PHY for Nokia Engineers — Spec to BTS Configuration

Nokia AirScale BTS is one of the most-deployed 5G NR platforms globally. If you're engineering Nokia gNBs day-to-day, this guide bridges the 3GPP spec language and Nokia's BTS configuration model.

AirScale Architecture

AirScale RU connects to ASOD/ASIK system module (DU + low CU); macro deployments use ASIA + ASOD/ASIK. F1 carries CU↔DU; eCPRI on Open Fronthaul carries DU↔RU.

MML / Operations

Nokia uses NetAct / MUSA for OAM. Common L1 MML commands include CCT (cell counter targets), CSPA (CSI-RS resource configuration), TPM (transmission power monitor). Nokia counter prefixes M5xxx series for L1 KPIs.

Numerology Configuration

Nokia AirScale BTS supports μ=0..3 in FR1, μ=2..3 in FR2. Configured via the LCELL or LNBTS objects. Default for n78 is μ=1 (30 kHz).

Beam Management

AirScale 64T64R supports up to 8 SSB beams (μ=1 default). CSI-RS beam refinement (P2) configurable via NCELLG or CSIRS object. Beam-failure recovery enabled by default.

KPI Mapping

Per-cell PDSCH BLER → Nokia counter M5034C0. PDSCH MCS distribution → M5025_M5026 series. PRACH preamble detect → M5045. PUCCH SR → M5052. Mapping table available in Nokia 5G NR Counter Reference.

Tuning Workflow

1. Capture 24h KPIs from NetAct. 2. Identify cells with elevated BLER or low MCS. 3. Map to PHY root cause via CafeTele Nokia 5G Optimizer (counter parser). 4. Adjust cell power, CSI-RS config, or BWP layout. 5. Re-measure.
